As I think back on 2024, I often find myself saying, “It’s been a year.” with expressions like 🫠😬😮💨🤗🥹😀 That are then quickly followed by words like grind, change, fun, opportunity, and clarity. This year has been one of growth and adjustment, for me personally as well as for the Stapleton Consulting team and the organisations we work with.
From an HR and employment perspective, 2024 was marked by organisations tightening their belts, navigating a post-election landscape, and positioning themselves to prosper in 2025. Our team has been right there alongside them, supporting the tough conversations and helping to forge paths forward.
While many in our field focused on restructures, our mahi has differed somewhat. There have been the restructures but we have also poured our energy into capability and culture development initiatives, supporting performance management, and strengthening employment foundations. These are the building blocks of resilient teams, enabling our clients to foster accountability and stronger relationships.
One of the highlights of my year was sharing Stapleton Consulting’s story and achievements with the Waikato Chamber of Commerce business awards judges. The process was nerve-wracking, but it was also a proud moment, made even more special because I got to share it with our team.
Now, here are their reflections on 2024:
Ashlea Murphy, Employment Relations Specialist
This year has been like navigating boats through rocky seas. Employers and employees have faced significant stress and uncertainty, brought on by economic challenges and a government in transition.
I’ve guided many employers through tough conversations, ensuring they handled them with care. These moments, while challenging, have also underscored how much employees value thoughtful communication. When handled well, even difficult outcomes are more acceptable.
My passion lies in connecting employers, leaders, and employees—highlighting their shared strengths and goals. Our workplaces influence not just our productivity but our overall well-being. By keeping people and culture at the forefront, employers can steer their teams through the storm and emerge stronger together.
John Brosnan, People and Capability Specialist
This year has been one of navigating challenges and facilitating change, both at work and in my personal life. But it’s also been incredibly rewarding.
Two milestones stand out for me. The first was receiving the Business Mentors NZ Pin of Recognition for my long and dedicated service as a mentor. Supporting others through Business Mentors has been a privilege, and it’s a joy to help businesses overcome challenges and achieve their goals.
The second milestone was making my 300th blood donation. It’s something I started at 16, and each plasma donation now helps an average of 11 people. Acts like mentoring and donating blood remind me of the power of community and the impact of small but meaningful contributions.
I feel fortunate to give back in ways that make a difference, and I’m inspired to continue finding opportunities to support others in the years ahead.
Swinta Majoor, Office Manager (Joined October 2024)
This year has been full of ups and downs for me, but finding my role at Stapleton Consulting has been a bright spot. As I settled in, I saw the challenges so many others are facing—rising mortgage rates, job insecurity, and what’s being called “financial fatigue.”
Employers are navigating tough terrain, balancing cost-cutting measures with the need to support their teams. Many have sought advice on how to manage difficult conversations around restructures and redundancies. At Stapleton Consulting, I’ve seen firsthand how deeply our team cares about finding solutions that work for everyone.
That’s a wrap.
We are all excited about what’s ahead in 2025, especially as we welcome new team members. Though we recently said goodbye to Louise Calvert, who is now embarking on a teaching career at the University of Waikato, we’re all proud of her and wish her the very best.
As a reminder, we will finish our work on Friday, 20 December, and we will return on Monday, 6 January 2025, ready for what 2025 brings.
